What is all Play?
Hello, and thank you for your interest in All Play! My name is Rachel, and I am excited you stopped by the site–with your help, I hope we can give every child an equal opportunity to play.
All Play is a collection of resources that aim to support parents, teachers, administrators, community members, and contractors through the processes of advocating for and establishing more inclusive and accessible playgrounds.
The idea for All Play came about after I visited an elementary school campus in San Diego and saw that during recess, students who required the use of a wheelchair were forced to sit on the sidelines because the playground was not physically accessible to them. Wood chips and sand kept them from meaningful interaction during this part of the school day. As I investigated further, I began to see that this was true of most schools. Children with limited mobility tended to be onlookers instead of participants when it came to the playground. This is not right, and it is not the way it should be, kids deserve better.
All Play was created as a result of a Master’s Degree Project at California State University San Marcos and works to create change by providing resources on how to do the following:
-
Adapt pre existing playgrounds
-
Build new playgrounds according to the principles of universal design —so that they are inclusive from the start
-
Locate accessible playgrounds around the globe so that everyone has a place to play and grow
