ADA Requirements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
As of 2012 U.S. Department of Justice put new standards in place, stating that public playgrounds must have the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
- Barrier-free travel routes to at least one ground level component (i.e. stand alone swing sets and slide, activity panels) <\/li>
- Barrier-free travel routes to sandbox play areas (when applicable) <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n
Barrier-free travel routes via ramps, or transfer systems to half of all elevated playground components (i.e. bridges, slides, climbing nets)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These standards are simply the minimum; the exact requirements depend on the overall size of the entire playground. The main goal is to provide meaningful play experiences for all, including individuals who cannot transfer out of a wheelchair or similar mobility device <\/strong>(Straton-Chapman & Schmidt, 2019)**.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
